Here's what some participants had to say about their entries.

“A lady came to give our school a presentation on the Book of Kells, and then my teacher (Ciarán Shaugh) helped our whole class create a painting to enter the competition. I spent about three or four hours on my painting, I got some ideas from a book my teacher had and I used markers and card paper for my painting. I also am very proud of my painting because if you look closely you will see I included the Drogheda flag, so it’s extra special!”
Jerry Owens

“I am in the middle of doing my art project for my junior cert, but I saw the competition details in The Irish Independent and decided I would submit something. It took me about two and a half hours to complete my painting, and I painted directly onto black card with acrylic paints. I love the designs from The Book of Kells and I already had a book that focused on individual images from the manuscript, and I used this for inspiration. I am delighted to have made it through to the finals!”
Niamh Fitzgibbon

“When I first read the brief I thought it was a very intriguing challenge, and I started to read up on the Book of Kells. The whole project took about four days in total with about nine hours work, I am a graphic designer by trade so I am used to really engrossing myself in an art work once I get started. I was able to get my hands on some original vellum, and then used the same measurements of the Book of Kells for my painting, I wanted to pay homage to the level of dedication shown by the monks who created the manuscript.”
Paul Feeney

“I read an interesting article about a hermit who used to keep a beehive underneath his desk in attempt to dissuade people from disturbing his peace, it was around that time that I became aware of the Boyne Valley Honey National Art Competition, and I saw the two ideas combine in my head, and the end result of my painting was a monk at work with a beehive at his feet! The painting itself was completed with very traditional methods, first prepared with 15 layers of jessem to get a marble like finish and then I painted directly using pigment and egg tempera, resulting in a really vivid and vibrant finish.”
Amanda Dillon

“I am a graphic designer and work full time, so my favourite way to spend quality time with my children is to paint and draw with them, myself and Ciara took on the Boyne Valley Honey National Art Competition challenge in around December, and the two paintings are constructed in a similar way, ink and pencil worked up with watercolour. I decided to base my painting on one of the monks, and pulled in all of the elements of the brief, whereas Ciara decided to paint a scene from the island of Iona as she loves painting scenery and animals!”
Doreen Mulroy (daughter Ciara is also among this months finalists)

All these finalists will go forward to the final, to be held in April 2010, and are in with a chance to win a Fine Art Facsimile copy of the Book of Kells worth €20,000.

Boyne Valley Honey is encouraging families to get creative in the New Year. There is still one chance left with finalists being announced March 2010.
